All about Ceramide and its skincare products

Ceramide is a fatty acid found in human skin. It helps protect the skin from getting dry and infected. They cover almost half of the outer skin,  also known as the epidermis. Ceramides are also commonly found  in creams and moisturizers. A ceramide moisturizer restores the natural ceramide in the skin and boosts your overall health. Its primary role is to prevent the entry of germs into your body through the skin. Ceremide, as a result, acts as a barrier in the skin against the intrusion of pollutant elements. This is also significant in the development of the brain and maintaining cell function.

Benefits of Ceramide

● It boosts the health of skin cells.

● It stops moisture from leaving the skin.

● It prevents the skin from getting dry and irritated.

● It serves as a barrier against environmental damage.

● It protects your skin from allergies and infection-causing germs such as bacteria and fungus

● It helps you fight against ageing by keeping the skin moist and supple.

What Happens When the Ceramide Level Goes Down?

  • Skin dehydration.
  • Irritation and dryness.

The ceramide levels go down, usually with age. As a result, you will experience skin problems like irritation and dryness.

  • Atopic dermatitis (eczema)

Your skin becomes red and itchy.

  • Ichthyosis.

Your skin looks dry and rough.

Types of Ceramides

Ceramides are primarily two-fold:

  • Natural
  • Synthetic

Natural ceramides

The skin has a natural amount of ceramides. This is called the natural type of ceramides which is usually found in the outer layer of the skin. This is so in animals and plants too.

Synthetic ceramides

Synthetic ceramide is artificially produced with the sphingosine substance. Also known as pseudoceramide, this type is free of pollutants usually found in the natural type. This type is also more steady. This type is used in skincare products. Sphingosine includes a series of carbon atoms with an amino acid. Plus,  this substance has different forms that connect the fatty acids to formulate ceramide. Based on this chain, several types of ceramides are found, which are used to manufacture skincare products.

● Ceramide 1 (Ceramide EOS)

● Ceramide 2 (Ceramide NS or NG)

● Ceramide 3 (Ceramide NP)

● Ceramide 6-II (Ceramide AP)

● Ceramide 9 (Ceramide EOP)

● Phytosphingosine

● Sphingosine

Benefits of Ceramide Eye Serums

Eyelash serums containing ceramide are ideal to treat dark circles under your eyes. According to skincare specialists, sleep deprivation, genetics and dehydrated skin are major causes of dark circles around the eyes. While a lifestyle change is highly recommended, skincare products containing ceramide would also be beneficial as eyelash serums.

Skincare Products Containing Ceramide

This artificial ceramide is contained in numerous skincare products:

  • Moisturizer
  • Cream
  • Serum
  • Toner

Ceramide eyelash serums, moisturizers and toners are ideal to repair skin health. They contain an artificial type of ceramide that enhances the performance of natural ceramide in the skin. The performance of both artificial and natural ceramides will soften and smoothen the skin giving it longevity.

How to Choose the Right Skincare Product?

Any skincare product with ceramide would be useful. But ceramide alone would not do the trick. For instance, if you have dry skin, skincare products containing only ceramide would not work. Research indicates that skincare products containing anti-inflammatory ingredients have the capacity to absorb ceramides in the skin.

If you have complicated skin issues, it is strictly advisable that you consult a certified dermatologist before using any skincare products.
